# Mastering Chain

Learn the standard order of mastering processors, from EQ to limiting, and why signal order matters for a clean final sound.

## The Essential Plugin Order

When mastering, the order of your tools (your "signal chain") changes how each plugin behaves. While every track is different, a standard beginner mastering chain follows this logical path:

- **Utility / Gain Stage:** Adjust the input level so your plugins work in their sweet spot.
- **Correction EQ:** Cut problematic or harsh frequencies before doing anything else.
- **Mastering Compressor:** Gently glue the track together and smooth out dynamics.
- **Tone EQ (Shaping):** Add subtle warmth, low-end body, or high-end air.
- **Stereo Enhancer (Optional):** Subtle widening of the high frequencies.
- **Limiter / Loudness Maximizer:** The final step to raise volume safely without clipping.

## Why Order Matters

- **EQ Before Limiting:** If you boost bass before a limiter, the limiter will react to that heavy bass and push down the rest of your track, making it sound squashed.
- **Limiter Always Last:** Your limiter must always be the very last plugin in the chain to act as a safety net against digital clipping.

Always trust your ears over exact chain templates. Adjust plugin order whenever a track demands a unique approach.
